A big part of planning for our main closet renovation was figuring out ahead of time how we wanted to store all of the things we planned to keep in the closet! Simple closet organization was on my brain from the beginning and it was so fun to see it all come together as our closet renovation was completed.

Hanging Clothes
A big component of most closets is hanging storage. We don’t have a ton of clothes that we hang up, but we still planned for what we feel like is adequate space for hanging clothes. We each have 2 sections; Allie’s on bottom, Nathan’s on top. Matching hangers were a must! We got a few packs of these velvet hangers and they have been great – my tank tops, dresses, and cardigans no longer fall off the hanger!
Two giant coffee table baskets on the bottom of the clothes hanging side contain a surprising amount of off season shoes!
Shelf Storage
Due to the size of our closet we chose to have the left wall be only shelf and drawer storage to keep the footprint smaller. The shelves are 13″ deep where as the clothes hanging side of the closet is 22″ deep – since our closet is exactly 6 feet wide this allowed us to still have a 36″ walkway down the middle of the closet.
Shoes
All of the skinnier middle shelves store our shoes! We have a few other pairs of shoes in the entry way coat closet, but this is a majority of our shoes.
Jeans & Sweaters
Storing jeans and sweaters on open shelving in the closet makes for easy access to see all of the options!
I like to store my jeans and sweaters folded. Having them displayed on these shelves at eye level keeps them front and center when I am trying to decide what to wear. I used to store these in drawers, but having them on open shelves has been a game changer for me! Nathan has a lot less clothes than I do, so he uses a few of his shelves to store some of his favorite books that he’s recently read.
Accessories – Hats, Bags, Scarves (& Books)
I use these baskets to store smaller purses, scarves, and hats. Nathan uses the baskets to store mementos, belts, and scarves.
Drawer Storage
The drawers are small at 13″ deep, but mighty. Hiding things away we don’t want displayed on open shelves.
We keep all of our undergarments, pajamas, sweats, and t-shirts in the drawers. We use these drawer organizers to keep all the smaller things separated. They are my favorite addition to any drawer.
Vanity
The vanity side of this wall turned out to be one of my favorite parts of our closet! I keep my jewelry on top of the vanity and underneath the vanity we each have a hamper for dirty clothes. I love having our hampers in the closet because it keeps all of the dirty clothes mostly contained to the closet.
Large Cabinet Storage
From the beginning we planned to have at least one floor to ceiling storage cabinet in the closet! I had hoped to have two, but IKEA stock had other things in mind. It worked out just fine because I love this side of our closet!
The floor to ceiling cabinet stores larger totes, ironing board, vacuum, Leo’s vacuum, iron, and steamer.
