One Room Challenge – Week 3: Progress

April 19, 2018

If you are new to the blog, welcome! I am an accountant by day and started this blog as a way to pursue my passion of design, renovation, and all things home. We bought our house two years ago and are slowly renovating it room by room.

It’s week two of the One Room Challenge. If you missed the first week you can catch up on it here and the second week here!

We are overhauling our den for this challenge and we started with a room full of boxes and lots of items that needed to be donated. This past week brought some progress, but not a ton.

Our beautiful green ottoman was delivered and I love it even more in person. It goes really well with the dark and moody vibes we are striving for in this room, while still being comfy enough to put our feet up on, but firm enough to really act as a coffee table. It’s the perfect balance and exactly what I had hoped for.

I ordered this simple industrial, yet classic side table to sit between the two coffee chairs that will go in the room and two of these gray denim floor cushions for extra comfy seating for playing games and lounging. I have a feeling those floor cushions will migrate around the house.

Speaking of chairs. We still haven’t 100% decided on chairs. We don’t want to buy chairs just to buy chairs for the sake of finishing the room for the challenge, but we also don’t want to spend a small fortune on chairs so we really are limited on options and have narrowed it down, but still plan on checking a few new ones out this weekend. Although, I have a feeling we more than likely will go with the white chairs from Ikea I had originally planned.

I was worried the white chairs from Ikea would be too overwhelming for the room since it is fairly small (10’x11′) and the chairs a pretty deep and wide. Since I am such a visual person I used some painters tape for the only thing I ever use painters tape for… planning furniture out! Ha. But seriously, this is my favorite use for painters tape and such a great way to make sure everything will fit in a space like you hope.

We originally had the chairs facing the fireplace, but we wouldn’t have even been able to walk around them to get in the room so turning them to be placed against the wall instead was a must. We want the furniture to be super comfy and the room to feel cozy. I think this layout allows us to use the bigger/comfier sized furniture pieces we want, while not making the room feel too small, but we shall see once we actually have chairs. The side table that is pictured above is not actually going in the room, I just used it for visualization purposes.

Based on the original mood board we planned on having a leaning bookshelf on one of the walls and a console table with a picture ledge above it on another wall… but now after taping everything out I feel it’s going to be too much in the space. So we will likely go with one or the other, but not both. Luckily we already have a side table we planned on using and a leaning bookshelf (that my dad made us a few years ago!) so we have options. Options are always good.

For this coming week we plan to paint the room (yay!), purchase chairs, and order the rug!

Here’s everything we have left to get the space completed:

  • install gas insert in fireplace (eek – I still need to get this scheduled!)
  • retile & paint fireplace
  • paint room
  • install window coverings
  • buy two chairs
  • order rug
  • order lamps
  • print & frame art
  • side/console table
  • decorate and style the space!

There’s a lot to do and I need to get my rear in gear to at least make sure I have everything ordered that cannot be purchased locally! I’ll be back with weekly updates for each of the next 3 weeks, but in the meantime be sure to check out the other participants.

I hope you follow along as we make over this space! Follow along on Instagram for more updates along the way!
