After living with our bedroom 80% done for the past two years I decided it was finally time to put the finishing touches on the space.
I wrote about the plan here and tweaking the plan here. If you’re curious we ended up going with #4!, minus the artwork, which I ended up deciding to keep in our living room – story of my decorating life. I am always switching things around and often like something so much I want it to live in my living room, at least for a while.
Whenever I am redoing a space it evolves. I like starting out with a vision and working form there. We didn’t end up too far from the original plan. We wanted our bedroom to feel dark and moody.
As a refresher this is what the room looked like when we moved in.
We painted, installed new floors, and moved our existing furniture in.
How I Transformed Our Bedroom Into a Moody Retreat (without new furniture)
I loved the color we painted our room after we moved in, but wanted it to feel a bit richer so I went one shade darker on the paint swatch.

To continue with the moodier feel I added dark curtains combined with white roman shades. The curtains are linen so while the color is dark, they still allow light to filter through, which I love, but does make having the roman shades necessary to block the light.
We already had the white chests as nightstands, but I wanted to add knobs to them to add a bit of interest. I used these knobs I had on hand and applied a gold finish to them using one of my favorite craft tools.
Instead of the print I had planned to use in here (that ended up in our living room), I opted for a simple gallery wall. I went with my favorite knots and hills prints, along with a vintage oil print of Paris and a sketch I created a while back. These pieces have floated around my house so I can’t guarantee they will stay on this wall, but I plan to keep them here for a while!
We added the cream and gray rug that used to be in our living room. You may remember we got a new living room rug a weeks ago that made this swap possible. The rug we previously had in here did not hold up well so we wanted something we knew worked well for a high traffic space. This the cream and gray rug had been in our living room for two years prior and still looked great so we knew it would do well in our bedroom too.
I even added curtains to the doorway to our bathroom. Here’s a sneak peak of a very unfinished space in our house. I was trying to disguise the unfinished drywall a bit, and it actually looks marginally better! I thought of doing a barn door here (and we may eventually), but I wanted to wait until we remodel our bathroom down the road before deciding.
I only made a few simple updates to our room, but it finally feels finished and for that I am so happy. Even though we made our bed every day before (yes, we are those people) I really enjoy making my bed now that the rest of the room feels so much more like us.
Fluffing pillows should really be my part-time job. I love a nicely fluffed pillow.
I hope you enjoyed this bedroom refresh! If you’re bedroom is feeling tired or needs a refresh I would encourage you to give it a little TLC. Giving our bedroom the attention in deserved makes for a much happier retreat at the end of the day.
