Our master bedroom has been almost 3 years in the making. We have made a lot of progress on our room, but it is still lacking the finishing touches. Despite our ongoing upstairs bathroom remodel (and my better judgement) I decided to also start working on a mini master bedroom refresh to finally complete all of the details in the space to really make the room feel like a retreat!
When we moved in our bedroom looked like this.
Not bad, but definitely nothing special and the carpet was gross and stained. We knew, similar to the rest of our home, we wanted to put our stamp on this room.

Progress

Shortly after we moved in we had the popcorn ceilings on our main floor scraped to a smooth finish, including our master bedroom. Then we had new flooring installed (see the update of how they’re holding up here!). After flooring was installed we added baseboards and painted the room. We went with Gibraltar Cliffs by Benjamin Moore for the walls and Simply White by Benjamin Moore for the trim. We moved everything in from that we had in our previous bedroom, with the exception of the two new rugs. Our room stayed this way for a while.
I decided I wanted a softer look and feel to our headboard, but wanted to use our existing bed so I made a DIY no-sew headboard slipcover, which is one of my favorite DIYs to date! The small vintage rug was moved to our laundry room and the base rug (a light colored chunky weave, sweater style rug) was NOT holding up in our bedroom, which is a pretty high traffic room in our house between us and the dogs, so we moved it to the guest room. We also re-arranged the furniture in the manner in which “the room seemed to be made for” – with the bed centered between the windows. I like to try out different arrangements to see if they work better, but ultimately this is the best use of space for the room.
Recently we also added an ottoman for the end of the bed and a new black semi-flush mount drum light fixture that is much better size-wise for the space – the room is fairly large, so a larger flush mount fixture works best, while not being too low. Our ceilings are only 8 feet so anything that’s not closer to flush mount feels to close to the bed. I loooove this new light! Just the perfect amount of contrast I was wanting.
Despite all of the changes we have made there is still a bit left to do to make the room feel finished; new window treatments, a new rug, artwork for the walls, hardware for the nightstands, and potentially a darker paint color!
The Plan
I’ve included a mood board mock of the overall plan for the feel I want the room to have when it is finished. I’m hoping for a moody space, that still feels relaxing and incorporates lighter neutral touches.
rug // light fixture (smaller version – our large one is sold out) // headboard (non-DIY) // window pane euro shams // duvet // small dresser // flooring // curtains // paint // hand sketch // modern print // tree print // hills print
I am ready to finally start putting the finishing touches on our room and make it a space that feels a bit more warm, inviting, and relaxing to us. I’d love for you to follow along! I will be sharing some behind the scenes as I start working on this refresh on Instagram and I will post an update on the blog once we’ve made some more progress!
