Our main closet renovation has been a long time coming. We renovated our main bathroom in the spring of 2020 and at the same time had the space for the closet prepped and ready for a closet install (floors & drywall installed), while we planned to tackle the actual closet install a little later. Well… a little later turned into over a year later thanks for pandemic related building supply issues, having a baby, and figuring out how to do house projects as a family of three. BUT. We did it!! We finished our main closet renovation and we are so dang happy with how it turned out. Especially knowing we created it ourselves!
All sources are included at the bottom of this post for reference.
Where We Started
When we moved in the space was a small 6’x6′ “walk-in” closet box with cat pee stained carpet and a single clothe hanging bar/shelf combo across the closet.
The before, before.
After we moved in we ripped up the carpet, painted the subfloor, and added simple IKEA closet shelves to make the space more functional. It certainly worked for the almost 5 years we lived with the closet. It was small, but mighty.
The better before.
The Plan
We wanted a “walk through” closet. Meaning you walk through our closet, like a hallway, to get to our main bathroom. We wanted it to feel more like a room than a closet. The plan was to use an IKEA PAX wardrobe systems to build out a custom feeling closet by adding additional custom trim work and painting everything!
The Final Result
Here is what our closet looks like today! We are so happy with how it turned out. Welcome to our new closet…
The wall to the left when you walk in the closet is our vanity, hamper, and larger storage area. We went back and forth on what we should do with this wall. Functionally it’s a nice place to store larger things like our vacuum and ironing board, while giving one more place to check yourself in the mirror. It is also a nice view that greets you when you walk into the closet our out of the bathroom.
The “skinny” left side of the closet is only 13 inches deep, but it packs in a lot of storage. We wanted to leave a 36 inch walkway in the middle of the closet to make things not feel too cramped. By making this left side skinnier with shelves and drawers compared to a second side of clothes hanging storage was the perfect compromise. The shelves are the perfect place to keep jeans, sweaters, and shoes. While the drawers are great for pajamas, underwear, and socks. The shelves also double as favorite book storage for Nathan because after putting everything into our nice, new closet he realized he didn’t have much to fill it with, which is not a bad thing!
The right side of the closet is traditional clothes hanging storage. We have his and her sides. We don’t hang a ton of clothes up, so this amount of hanging space works great for us.
The closet leads into our main bathroom. I love how the three spaces now flow together. They all “go” without necessarily matching.
We are so happy to have a functioning and beautiful closet now!
