The main bathroom is officially complete! The renovation work has been done for a few months now, but I slowly added all of the finishing decor touches and I feel like I can finally say it’s complete now. I’m sure I will swap a few things out over time, mainly smaller decor pieces because I can’t help myself, but for now it’s perfect.
We made the actual footprint of the bathroom a lot smaller than it used to be to make room for a slightly larger closet and even though it’s technically smaller it feels so much more functional to us! We opted out of a separate toilet room to make room for a large shower and we do not regret it at all! A separate toilet room would be nice, but with the space we had available we knew this was the best use for us.
As a reminder this is where the bathroom started.

And this was the layout we decided to go with. We pulled the closet into the bathroom space to create a walk through closet. We pushed the vanity back into where the large tub was as well as brought the toilet out of the previous toilet/shower closet to create one large shower room! The layout has been working so well for us!
The closet still isn’t done – we planned on starting right about when Covid-19 was getting bad and then our local Ikea closed, so we put the project on hold – now we may just wait until after the baby arrives to start, we shall see!
The Big Reveal
Now to the most exciting part, the pictures!

We are so happy we got to keep this large window in the bathroom! Initially, we thought the only way to use the space and get everything we wanted (a double vanity, a much larger shower, and a larger closet) was to move or remove the window. BUT we made it work and I’m so glad we did. I love all the natural light that comes in.
I chose a mixture of modern and traditional elements to provide a good balance throughout the space. I also mixed metals in the bathroom like I do around the rest of our home. I chose brass light fixtures and towel hooks. The mirrors are black as well as the cabinet hardware. All of the plumbing fixtures are chrome, which match the rest of our bathrooms. I try to keep similar metal finishes throughout our home and I think it especially helps the bathrooms feel cohesive without all being the exact same.
The toilet is not centered on the wall due to a floor vent to the left of the toilet, so rather than centering artwork above the toilet I went with an asymmetrical gallery wall to distract the eye from the toilet not being centered.
My favorite aspect of the whole renovation is our new shower. It feels so luxurious. This shower is almost 3x the size as the shower that use to be in our bathroom! The shower takes up the exact square footage of our previous water closet – it used to house a smaller shower AND the toilet. By moving the toilet out of the space we were able to use the entire space as a now “shower room”. If you are renovating your bathroom I highly recommend adding a bench or footrest to your shower for shaving as well as a ledge or niche for all of your products.
This bathroom was 4 years in the making and we are so very happy with how it turned out!
