Over the past few weeks I have slowly been refreshing my office! Working from home for the foreseeable future was just the motivation I needed to soften the space up a bit so it felt more in line with my style. As part of my mini office refresh I knew the room needed a new rug since the previous rug I had in the office now lives upstairs!
My goal with the office refresh was to keep the dark paint color on the walls while adding softer colors in the room through textiles, art, and repainting the fireplace. I specifically wanted a vintage rug, which can be tough to find. Usually the process of finding and selecting a vintage rug is daunting, but it was made so simple with Revival Rugs!
I have a few categories I always use to help narrow down my rug search and make sure I find a rug that is exactly what I was envisioning and works well in the space.
SIZE
I start out by measuring the space. Our office is about 11 1/2 feet by 11 feet, almost a perfect square. Then I think about the way the furniture is or will be laid out in the room. I knew I wanted a “walkway” when you enter the room and the rug to be centered under the desk and dresser. Based on my measurements I knew I needed a rug that was anywhere from 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 feet long and anywhere from 6 to 7 feet wide. Knowing the size you need really helps narrow down your search! Luckily, Revival Rugs has a handy search feature that allows you to narrow down your selections by exact size measurements.
Tip: Use painter’s tape on the floor to test out the rug size you are planning on buying to make sure it will work!
COLOR
After I know the size I need I pick the general color scheme I want in the rug. For the office I wanted a rug that had more soft, muted colors, rather than darker, vibrant colors since the wall color is so dark on it’s own! Based on the inspiration pictures I had for the room I easily narrowed it down to a rug that was in more of the beige-y, peach-y tones. Again, Revival Rugs made it easy to narrow down my selection by size and then by color. They even have a whole category of beige rugs, which made me so happy!
PATTERN
While size and color are very important when selecting a rug, I would say the pattern is nearly as important! Rugs come in all sorts of patterns and it can be a little overwhelming to know which scale of pattern you want. Again, I wanted the rug to soften the room so I narrowed my selection down to a more organic style (rather than geometric) and avoided rugs that had a large medallion in the middle. I focused on rugs that fit my size and color requirements that also had a more organic pattern. I landed on my beauty of a rug that I know will be a treasured piece in our home for years to come. It perfectly fits the vision I had for softening up the feel of my office.
I hope these categories help you on your next rug search! If you are searching for a new rug, especially a vintage, one-of-a kind rug, I would highly recommend starting your search with Revival Rugs. Plus you can use code THEADOREDABODE10 for 10% off your next purchase!
