We have a new art addition to our living room and I am so excited about it! I saw this White Sands print from Juniper Print Shop and fell in love. I knew it could make a statement printed as a canvas with a floating frame around it. Plus, Nathan loves New Mexico and this beautiful print of New Mexico felt like it melded both of our styles nicely (neutral for me and paid homage to Nathan’s love for that part of the country).
I originally planned to include it in our master bedroom refresh and I ordered it in a 24″x36″ canvas from Costco thinking I would use it there. Once the canvas came in we both thought it would look really nice above the couch and would be a point of calm against the fireplace and new rug. So it ending up staying in the living room! I have a habit of stealing things intended for other spaces for the living room.
We created a floating frame for the canvas using Making Pretty Spaces’s tutorial. I will let you read her very thorough tutorial if you are interested in making your own, but here are a few behind the scene’s snaps from the process!
I cut the outside frame to size and tested it to make sure it would fit.
We glued the frame together one side at a time and tacked the corners with finish nails using a nail gun.
This was definitely a two person job, with one person holding the upright piece in place and the other nailing the corner.
Once we had the frame built I applied a light white wash using leftover white wall paint watered down until the mixture was almost opaque. I applied the mixture to the wood with an old rag, similar to stain. I wanted the wood grain to show through and keep the overall light wood tone, but I wanted to cut down the yellow tones. The white wash worked very nicely!
We already have a lot of dark wood tones in the room so I wanted the frame to be a lighter neutral anchor point on the wall.
I am so happy with how this piece of art turned out!
