You don’t have to spend money to freshen up your home décor. Though I do love to buy new, pretty things for my house, I also am trying to practice mindfulness in what I buy and how much I buy. We have plenty to fill our home for which I am very grateful and am trying to focus on that instead of feeling the need to buy new. I have a few tactics I’ve been leaning on to make the spaces in our home feel fresh without bringing anything new into our home. This doesn’t mean I won’t ever buy any new décor, but like I said, I just want to be more mindful of what I do.
1 – BRING THE OUTSIDE IN
Take your scissors into your yard or a nearby park (shhh I won’t tell) and clip a few blooms and branches. I especially love to take advantage of this in the spring when everything is blooming and vibrant.
Our lilacs bloomed recently, and I brought a few blooms inside and put them in my favorite blue and white thrifted vase. They look beautiful, add some color, and smell incredible.
I do the same with small tree and bush branches. A few branches displayed in a vase instantly adds color and height to any room!
2 – SHOP YOUR HOME
Rethink your existing décor and see what you could easily swap around for a fresh change! I call this shopping my house and I do it all the time and love to encourage others to do it as well. Do you have multiple vases? Try displaying them in different locations than normal. Swap décor items you have displayed on shelves or furniture. Re-arranging items can make everything feel fresh and different, without having to buy any new décor.
Pillow covers, throw blankets, towels, and linens are another easy way to change the color and feel of a space. Swap the throw pillows on your sofa with the ones on your bed, or simply minimize the amount of pillows and blankets you have out for a cleaner look for spring. I added a cheerful yellow towel in our power room and it feels so welcoming for spring!
Artwork and rugs are two other things you could swap from room to room, if the size and dimensions work. These might be more time consuming to swap, but you would be amazing at how completely different a room will feel with a different rug and artwork. I love to play musical art and rugs in our home. It is not Nathan’s favorite pastime, but he is very tolerant and usually willing to help because he knows it’s important to me.
3 – EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE
I am a big proponent of having a place for everything and having everything in its place. When my house is cluttered my mind also feels cluttered.
Organizing and de-cluttering your home (or at the least your main living areas) will really make your home feel fresh and will give you a different perspective on things, at least it does for me. When everything is in its place I can easily see all of our favorite mementos and treasures that we have displayed around our home, which brings back good memories.
If your home is feeling a bit cluttered and you find yourself wanting new “things” to feel fresh for spring… or any other season for that matter, I would encourage you to take a pass or two through your main living areas and donate or sell items you feel you no longer need or could be of more use to someone else (you could do bedroom and bathrooms too if you are feeling ambitious!). It’s amazing how a little decluttering and putting everything away in its designated place will make your home feel fresh again, without even bringing anything new into your home!
