You may remember our bathroom started out looking like this.
Be sure to check out all the before pictures and the plans in this post.
We knew we wanted to optimize the layout and utilize what felt like a lot of unused space to us that was in the middle of our bathroom. So we drew up plans to extend our closet by a few few, move the vanity down closer to the window, and get rid of the giant tub in favor of an extra large shower.
Instead of our usual DIY route we knew this project would require the help of a contractor, specifically to move the plumbing, electrical, and walls. Our contractor started and very quickly our bathroom started changing!
Bathroom Progress
Demo happened in about 2 days. In the beginning we had a 2 man crew working on this project.
As soon as demo was done they started moving and framing out the walls, starting with the two sets of new pocket doors – one leading from our bedroom to our walk-through closet and one leading from the closet to our bathroom.
After the walls were framed in they moved the plumbing and electrical, which took a while. Once the electrical and plumbing were moved then the drywall was installed.
Once drywall was complete the building of the shower pan, walls, bench, and niche happened. Quickly followed by tile and grout! All of a sudden our dream shower was coming to life. The shower head will be swapped out to something much larger!
After tile was installed we measured for our marble bench, ledge, and curb to make sure the measurements were precise – we ordered honed marble remnants through a local stone fabricator to closely match the honed Carrara marble tile and our contract installed them once they came in.
After the shower was finished the toilet, mirrors, sconces, and vanity were installed, closely followed by trim installation and paint! Over the course of a week our bathroom really started to take shape. At this point we only had our lead contractor working on the project.
The vanity we ordered came in a black/espresso color and we ultimately decided to paint it to bring in a little bit of color to the bathroom! We went with Pewter Green by Sherwin Williams and it is the dreamiest color!! We also spray painted the hardware a satin gold.
After the vanity was installed our contractor was able to finish up the plumbing installation for the sinks and then he was complete!
This means the big parts of our bathroom are complete! We are so thankful our contractor was able to finish this project a few week ago at the before the COVID-19 pandemic really hit in Kansas City, while construction is deemed essential in the stay at home orders we have our project didn’t feel essential to me since we were perfectly comfortable living upstairs and using our guest bathroom. I was grateful for our renovation to be complete during the first week we were at home and now we have the house to our selves again.
What’s Next?
We need to finish the smaller details in the bathroom.
- Clean – the whole bathroom is still pretty dusty
- Hang art
- Install shelves above the toilet
- Install towel hooks
- Order and install a new window covering – I am planning to go with a top down style roman shade!
- Organize our bathroom essentials
Once all of these items are complete the bathroom project will be finished and we will be moving on to the closet portion of the project! When our contractor was doing the bathroom we had him get the walk-through closet “paint ready” – meaning flooring and drywall were installed and we are left with a shell of a room. We plan to install a custom closet using the Ikea PAX system – which we plan to fully customize and trim out, which will be a big DIY!! We are very excited to start this part of the project, but it will likely be after our stay at home orders are lifted. For the time being we will be living upstairs in a spare room and using our freshly renovated upstairs bathroom, which truly feels like a treat!
